Clearly, this trend poses long-term risks to the balanced development of the workforce across various sectors, especially in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This could result in dependence on foreign labor for high-tech industries. Additionally, the oversaturation in SS fields complicates job-seeking efforts for graduates.
In recent years, the number of candidates sitting for the high school graduation exam has stabilized at around 1 million. However, the number of students choosing the Social Sciences (SS) exam has continuously increased over the past seven years. This shift corresponds to a decline in candidates opting for the Natural Sciences (NS) exam, leading to a reduced intake for basic science and NS fields.
In 2024, approximately 37% of candidates registered for the NS exam (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), while 63% chose the SS exam (History, Geography, Civic Education), marking a 7.7% increase compared to the previous year. Since 2017, when the SS and NS exams were introduced, the number of students selecting SS has surpassed NS by about 90,000 and the gap continues to widen. Currently, students opting for the SS exam outnumber those choosing the NS exam by over 250,000.
Data from the 2024 high school graduation exam results shows that the subjects with the highest number of perfect scores (10 points) were Civic Education, Geography, History, and Chemistry. Among the top 100 students with the highest exam scores, only 2 took the NS exam, while 98 took the SS exam. The top-performing graduates were also from the SS exam category. Statistics from the 2023 enrollment results indicate that among the top 10 fields with the highest enrollment rates, the SS-economics sector dominates.
This phenomenon can be attributed to the perception that the SS exam is "easier" to score well in compared to the more in-depth knowledge required for the NS exam. By choosing this exam, students can not only fulfill graduation requirements but also allocate more time to mandatory subjects. Such pragmatic calculations can lead to career choices that do not align with students' interests and abilities, as well as pressure to lower admission standards in technical fields (except for large, reputable institutions) to meet enrollment quotas.
To ensure that numbers do not remain mere statistics, there is an urgent need to enhance career guidance education, helping students understand the job opportunities and growth potential in technical and technological fields. The education sector should improve curricula and teaching methods for NS subjects to make them more engaging and comprehensible. Alongside this, policies supporting tuition fees and scholarships for students pursuing NS and technical fields should be strengthened to attract more learners into these areas. Furthermore, increasing collaboration between businesses and educational institutions can create practical training programs, internships, and job opportunities post-graduation.
The Ministry of Education and Training should develop macro-level projects and solutions to better regulate student enrollment rather than relying solely on rigid measures. Additionally, there should be annual statistics on job opportunities in each sector, including basic science and technology-engineering fields, to provide students with a more scientific basis for their choices.
